Today I’m going to talk about how to make a natural homemade toothpaste.
There are several ingredients that you can add and I am going to talk about a few of them today.
Baking Soda / Bentonite Clay
A good base to start with in your toothpaste is either baking soda or bentonite clay or both.
Baking soda is a mild abrasive that is good for cleaning the plaque from your teeth and deodorizing your mouth. It also helps to kill mouth bacteria.
Bentonite clay in your paste is good for absorbing the toxins and bacteria in your mouth.
I added coconut oil which is an antibacterial that helps to reduce the bacteria in your mouth that causes gum disease and cavities and it also helps to reduce plaque buildup.
I added peppermint oil which helps to eliminate bad breath and prevent cavities.
I also added clove oil. Clove oil is an antibacterial, it is good for toothaches and sensitive gums as it helps to numb the pain. Clove oil also reduces decalcification of your teeth and even helps to re-mineralize your teeth.
You can also add cinnamon oil or orange oil to enhances flavor and further increases your oral health.
I also added Xylitol which is a natural sweetener that you can use in your paste. Xylitol is reported to help in reducing cavities.
Homemade Natural Toothpaste Ingredients:
2 tablespoons baking soda /bentonite clay
1-1 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil
7-10 drops of peppermint oil
3-5 drops of clove oil
1 tablespoon xylitol
Mix the ingredients all together until well blended and then you can place it in a little tub with a lid or a tube, which you can find at places like Wal-Mart or Amazon sells them. There is a brand called Gotoob or Gotubb that is bpa free and not very expensive.
If you like, you can use this paste to replace your regular toothpaste or to use intermittently with your regular toothpaste.
Now let’s talk about oil pulling for your dental health. You can use a few different oils like sunflower seed oil and olive oil. I personally like to use coconut oil because of its antibacterial properties that helps to reduce cavities and tooth decay.
Basically, you simply swish the coconut oil gently in your mouth and through your teeth. Its recommended that you swish for about 15 minutes. I can only swish for about 5 minutes before I have to spit it out. Once you spit the oil out make sure to rinse your mouth out with water. I also like to brush my teeth after I swish with the oil to remove the taste of the oil and any oil that is still in my mouth. Also make sure you don’t swallow any of the coconut oil because it is full of the bacteria that it has picked up from your mouth.
So play around with the toothpaste recipe and let me know how you like it and I’ll see you next week.
